Showcase Of Multi-cultural Performances

Christchurch primary schools will present Cultural Festival 2001, staging in the Christchurch Town Hall next week, 17-20 September.

Cultural Festival 2001 boasts a showcase of multi-cultural performances, visual art exhibition and celebrity MCs including Stacey Daniels, Kimo Winiata.

Traditional and contemporary performances will be featured. They will be performed by about 40 of Canterbury’s primary and intermediate schools and children’s performance groups, representing more than 10 nationalities, including Maori, Tongan, Irish, Somali, Scottish, Philippine, Netherlands, Samoan, Pakeha, Asian, Cook Island.

The theme of this year’s festival is “Nga tae o Aotearoa … colours of Aotearoa”, which reflects the diversity of cultures within New Zealand and demonstrates how they can work together to create a spectacular children’s showcase of cultures.

A highlight of this year’s festival is a Visual Art Exhibition featuring artworks from a number of primary and intermediate schools, created by children who are taking part in the festival. About 15 schools will participate in the exhibition, including artworks, which depict themes such as the rainbow, children, multiculturalism and “colours of Aotearoa”.

“Live statues,” displaying traditional cultural costumes at some performances, will be a feature of the Visual Art Exhibition.

Cultural Festival 2001 is a unique opportunity to experience an authentic, vibrant celebration of Aotearoa’s many different cultures.

Concerts will stage from 7-9.15pm daily with a matinee on Thursday 20th from 1-3pm.
