Rugby Parade Is On Saturday
Rugby fans will be lining Colombo Street on Saturday to celebrate another rugby Ranfurly Shield clash.
Following publicity that a traditional parade will not be held, many telephone calls to the president of the Canterbury Rugby Supporters’ Club, Dick Tayler, showed a demand existed and that something should be done.
So the club officials and the Christchurch City Council’s Leisure staff met today to make advance for a Saturday parade. The parade will start at the Moorhouse Avenue-Colombo Street overbridge at 11am. Colombo St will be closed for the half-an-hour-long parade that will end in Cathedral Square. Mr. Tayler said it was great to get the City Council, the Police and the club together to organise the parade at short notice. “I had such a response to the publicity about the parade being off that it was obvious something had to be done. I’m pleased to say that the Council and the Police have done so much in such a short time to make the parade possible,” he said. “Now the club has to ensure plenty of floats turn up on the day. Clubs and organisations wanting to take part have to register with me as soon as possible,” Mr. Tayler said. The last Ranfurly Shield parades were held in 1995 when three were held in that season. Up to 70 floats took part each time. Besides the floats, the Council is arranging for bands to take part and entertainers, such as clowns.
“We are very pleased this is going ahead. It shows the passion for rugby in this province,” Mr. Tayler said. The Canterbury-Wellington shield game will start at 2.30pm at Jade Stadium.
