Once-a-year Ride Through Tunnel
The once-a-year ride through the Lyttelton Road Tunnel for cyclists will be held on Sunday from 10.30am.
Cyclists will assemble in the car park next to the Gondola car park to be able to ride through en masse.
The return journey will be made from a mass start at 2pm in Lyttelton. Latecomers will not be allowed in the tunnel. Children under 10 years cannot take part in the ride, nor can people on skateboards, rollerblades and such like. Stopping is not allowed in the tunnel and there is no turning back, as each closure is one-way only. A gold coin donation will go to the Lyttelton Museum. The tunnel ride coincides with the New Zealand Cycling Conference being held in Christchurch from Friday 21-22 September at the Chateau on the Park Hotel. A keynote speaker, Karel K de Roy van Zuydewyn, a senior traffic policy co-ordinator for 23 local authorities in Holland, will be available for interview on Thursday 20 September by arrangement by phoning: 941 8472. Further information: Alix Newman, Christchurch City Council Cycle Transport Planner: 941 8472.
