Christchurch City Council Media Release 3 Sept 2001

Next Stage Of Expressway To Open

Retiring Councillor David Close will cut the ribbon to open the next stage of the $16 million Woolston-Burwood Expressway on Wednesday 19 September at 10am.

The ceremony will mark another milestone in the expressway, a joint venture between Transit New Zealand and the Christchurch City Council.

Stage 1A - from Queen Elizabeth 11 Drive to New Brighton Road - was opened in August last year.

Cr. Close will open stage 1B - from the New Brighton Road roundabout, across a new bridge, to Wainoni Road.

This section is the continuation of Anzac Drive.

After a performance by the Wainoni Primary School cultural group and speeches, those attending the opening will be the first to drive over the newly opened section.

The opening ceremony will be performed on the new bridge that has several distinctive architectural features. These include special lamp standards and the handrails.

Other features of the project are detailed in the accompanying background information papers.
