New Library A Step Closer

Christchurch residents are urged to have their say in the development of a concept plan for a new south Christchurch Library/Service Centre and Learning Centre.

The Christchurch City Council wants to hear people’s views about the new facility to be built in Beckenham.

“In particular we would like to know what they value in a library and service centre,” says Project Manager, Ian McKenzie.

“There may be some features in existing libraries and service centres around the city that can be replicated or new ideas that would encourage use of the new facility”.

The combined Centre will be built on Council land where the Beckenham Service Centre is now sited. The existing building will most probably be demolished and a new building, which will incorporate the best features of the Fendalton and New Brighton Libraries, constructed.

As well as a library and service centre, the building will include a Learning Centre. A first for New Zealand, the Learning Centre will be made possible by Ministry of Education funds available because of the closure of Sydenham School.

It is proposed that the computer Learning Centre will cater to the needs of primary school students and be used by community groups in the evening. The new Library will have a starting collection of 50,000 to 60,000 books. The Spreydon Library and the St Martins Adult Library will remain open. The St Martins Children’s Library will relocate to the new facility.

A public meeting will be held on Monday 24 September from 7-9pm at the Cashmere Club, 88 Hunter Terrace. A meeting for Senior Citizens will be held Wednesday 26 September from 2-4pm at the Cashmere Club. More information can be obtained by ringing 941 7923.
