Christchurch City Council Media Release 26 September 2001

Can We Beat The Aussies With Dogs?

New Zealand couldn’t beat the Australians at Rugby, so perhaps dogs might have more success.

The next big sporting clash between the countries will be at Addington Raceway on Thursday 11 October at 5.40pm.

Then, the Sister Cities Greyhound Challenge Race Meeting will be held with special races between greyhounds from Christchurch and Adelaide, one of Christchurch’s six sister cities.

Last year four Christchurch greyhounds travelled to Adelaide to compete in the first Sister Cities’ greyhound meeting.

These dogs came first, second, third and fifth.

This year Adelaide is sending four dogs (as well as 10 owners and trainers) to try to regain some pride.

The Lesley Keast Stakes (for bitches only) will run at 7pm. Christchurch’s Deputy Mayor, Cr. Keast, will present an engraved plate to the winning owner.

The Kingston Cup will be run at 8.20pm and the premier race, for the Sister Cities Cup, will be raced at 9.05pm. Mayor Garry Moore will present the trophy. This race carries $30,000 prize money.

The Sister Cities Cup will be screened live in Australia on Sky Television along with the last race of the meeting, the Canterbury draught Six Pack at 9.35pm.
