Wanted: Hosts To Welcome Tourists
Up to 15 Christchurch residents, who love the city, are good talkers and are fit, are wanted by the City Council as tourist hosts.
The volunteer hosts are wanted to walk around the central city greeting tourists and helping them with any queries.
The host scheme has been trialled voluntarily for six months by Wynn Ballantine who proposed the scheme to the Council and Christchurch and Canterbury Marketing Ltd. The Council’s City Promotions Co-ordinator, Julie Battersby, said today that the trial was highly successful. It attracted much international feedback, she said. So the Council has decided to extend the host scheme and is seeking up to 15 people to volunteer as city hosts. “They can be of either sex, and from any ethnic background. Some people have already contacted us but we need more,” Ms Battersby said. She wants any would-be volunteer to write to her at the Council, PO Box 237. Appointments as hosts will be made in mid-November and they will be on the streets soon after that ready for the main tourist season. Wynn Ballantine will manage the programme and develop rosters of up to four-hour period of roving the central city assisting with tourists.
