Voting Returns At 29.46 Per Cent

So far 67,100 voting papers have been returned to the Electoral Office in the Christchurch City Council elections.

This represents 29.46 per cent of the 227,793 voting papers sent out.

Voting will close at noon on Saturday 13 October and the results should be available within hours of the postal poll closing.

The Christchurch Electoral Officer, Max Robertson, today urged voters to return their papers as soon as possible.

Voting papers must be in the post no later than Thursday to reach the Electoral Office in time for counting.

Special voting facilities are available on the ground floor at the Civic Offices, 163 Tuam Street, between 8.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am-noon on 13 October.

Up to Saturday 6 October the 27.96 per cent of voting papers had been returned, with the highest return (31.13 per cent) in the Waimairi Ward. The lowest was in the Hagley Ward with a 21.56 per cent return. Burwood Ward also returned more than 30 per cent.

Today the Waimairi Ward still leads with a 33 per cent return.

Spreydon, Pegasus, Papanui, Ferrymead and Burwood Wards have higher than 30 per cent returns. But Fendalton (28.93 per cent), Hagley (22.46), Heathcote (28.81), Riccarton (27.14), Shirley (26.95) and Wigram (29.75) Wards have a lower than 30 per cent return.
