Christchurch City Council Media Release 17 October 2001

Odour Likely To Last Another Week

Contractors are working around the clock to get the Christchurch City Council Waste Water Treatment Plant at Bromley back to normal to bring an end to the odour escaping over the city.

Parts of the city have been affected for some weeks but Council staff hopes that the odour will be gone in about a week.

The plant is halfway through a $33.7 million upgrade and is at a stage where the connection of some new facilities is being made to existing installations.

This means that some parts of the system have to be removed from service, such as the trickling filters.

Most of the odour has come from the increased load on the oxidation ponds while the changes are being made.

The odour has been intense in the last few weeks but the modifications are nearing completion.

The plant has been on primary treatment only while the changes are made. The contractors have been working around the clock to complete the work.

While the plant is expected to be back to normal operation by Friday, it will be another five to seven days before the odour is expected to start to abate.

In March next year further work will be carried out on the filters and odour could be released again.

The plant upgrading is due to be finished in 2006.
