More Vandalism In Botanic Gardens

Vandals attacked 11 trees and shrubs in the Botanic Gardens over the weekend.

This time they damaged mostly trees of the protea family on the Pine Mount, near the Museum Entrance. Besides damaging 11 trees, vandals also chopped a small shrub completely cut down and left where it fell.

This appears to have brought down with loppers.

The Garden’s Grounds Team Leader, Maria Adamski, says the vandalism is devastating “as some of the plants were rare and a number of them were collected in the wild in South Africa.”

This is the second bout of vandalism in a short time. Recently five cherry trees were vandalised in Riccarton Avenue, near Christchurch Hospital.

Vandalism to trees was costing ratepayers thousands of dollars each year, Ms Adamski says.
