Good Response To New Library

Christchurch residents have taken the opportunity to have their say about a new south Christchurch Library-Service Centre and Learning Centre.

“We are pleased with the turnout for the public meetings we have had to discuss the new facility to be built in Beckenham. We’ve heard some wonderful ideas and will be looking at these closely as the project develops,” says the Project Manager, Ian McKenzie. Four main themes have emerged from the public meetings - access, ambience, services and sustainability.

Interest in parking, signage and consideration for people with disabilities featured under the issue of access.

Ambience concerns centred round the need for the new building to blend in with the neighbourhood. River views from within the building, retention of as many of the larger trees as possible and using materials such as stone were all preferences expressed.

The provision of community services such as a range of newspapers and magazines, Information Technology education, Internet and email services, photocopying and service centre information, that are available at existing libraries and service centres should be replicated.

Ensuring that the building is “sustainable” in nature came out strongly at the meetings.

Project team members are also visiting City Council facilities in the area to ask the public for their suggestions for the new building. This has been very successful, especially during school holidays when families are making the most of Council facilities.

“Many of the issues raised have already been taken into account but it was good to hear them being reiterated by the public. There were also some new ideas that we will explore,” says Ian McKenzie.

A second public meeting will be held on Thursday 11 October from 7-9pm at Rowley School, Rowley Avenue. More information can be obtained by ringing 941 7923.
