Christchurch City Council Media Release 19 October 2001

Changes To Recycling Collection

A bigger range of materials is to be collected under the Christchurch City Council’s kerbside recycling scheme.

Full details of the changes will be delivered to all city households in the next two weeks.

As the volume of recyclables is expected to rise significantly, the company that makes the collection, Onyx New Zealand, has to alter the way it collects the recyclable material.

In preparation for the changes, Onyx will start collecting paper using separate trucks from Monday 22 October.

The trucks will not be the normal recycling or refuse trucks.

The majority of the city will have recycled paper collected by one of five trucks set aside to collect paper only.

Only two of 12 existing recycling trucks will continue collecting paper along with other recyclables.

Ten of the recycling trucks will be collecting glass, can and plastic bottles only.

Therefore, a large number of city households will have three different trucks collecting refuse, paper and other recyclables.

“Because collection times will vary while the new system gets settled, it is essential that refuse and recycling crates are out in the streets by 7.30am,” says the Council’s Refuse Operations Manager, David Harris.

“The public should notice little difference other than another truck in their streets. Householders should not worry if the paper is not picked up at a different time other recycling material,” he says.
