Celebrate Guy Fawkes Day at the Meridian Energy Fireworks Extravaganza

Monday November 5th, 9.30pm, New Brighton Pier and surrounding beach.

With names like 'Happy Dragons Eggs', 'Poisonous Spider' and 'Soaring Eagle', the breathtaking fireworks that will be used during this years Meridian Energy Fireworks Extravaganza at New Brighton promise to be bigger, brighter, and better than ever.

Paul Collins, with Fireworks International New Zealand Ltd is creating the magic this year and, as always, it's a challenge.

"I'm including exotic fireworks that are difficult to get hold of, along with some old favourites. Roman Candles are always popular. The French call them 'The Torch of Life' because of the continuation of stars rising one after another. It's a great effect."

"Fireworks appeal to everybody and Meridian is delighted to be able bring Canterbury families an opportunity to enjoy a fun night out and splendid display" says Alan Seay, Meridian Energy spokesperson. "And public firework events offer people the opportunity to see an extravagant show in a safer environment.

"Meridian will also have their own special firework piece which will start the display", Mr Seay added.

The pier will be completely lit up at times during the over 15 minute display, and this years choice of music will appeal to young and young at heart. Two tracks by techno band The Chemical Brothers, and a classic Who number will bring New Brighton to life, and the entire event will be simulcast on the Lite FM frequencies of 94.5FM or 1260AM.

Thousands are expected to attend this year's Meridian Energy Fireworks Extravaganza, and audience members are encouraged to arrive early, dress warmly, and bring their radio. Free shuttle buses are provided from several city locations, and the buses will depart from Oram Avenue in New Brighton after the show at 10.15pm.

Entertainment and food vendors will be available on site and for more information, call Businfo on 366 8855, or 9416 840 for information regarding mobility parking, road closures, and parking.

This Showtime Canterbury event is proudly provided by Christchurch City Council Leisure, and is supported by Meridian Energy, and Lite FM.
