12 New Trees For Square
Twelve Hornbeam trees are to be planted outside the BNZ in the southeast corner of the Square.
The trees, approximately 3 metres in height (with a potential to grow to 4-5 metres), will be placed in a planter box measuring 3.7 x 30 metres with a depth of 1 metre, made of precast concrete with a brushed finish.
The deciduous trees will be trained along wires to form a stilted hedge (effectively a hedge on trunks allowing people to see through the trunks beneath the vegetation) and will be under planted with grass. “The planter box will help to better delineate the road, slow traffic down, discourage pedestrians taking a potentially unsafe short cut across the bus route and provide a buffer between the buses and traffic, and pedestrian area, says Dave Hinman. “Timber seating will be placed along the southern side of the planter box which will be illuminated during the evening and night with down lighting while the trees will have up lighting from the street side. These features together with the trees are designed to provide a more attractive area for people both walking through or wanting to take some time out.” The planter box together with seating will be completed as soon as the weather permits as will the sowing of grass beneath two trees near the Godley statue. Further, last month six oak trees were planted at the northern entrance to the Square along Colombo Street. Investigation is underway into potential changes to some areas of paving. Photo Opportunity
