Tests To Be Conducted On Council Housing Complexes

Christchurch City Council will be undertaking tests to some of its housing complexes to confirm that the properties are safe for their tenants.

The nine housing complexes identified may have been used as a site for waste deposit prior to Council housing being built on them. Please see the attached list of housing complexes involved.

Rob Dally, Property Manager at Christchurch City Council, said that the health and safety of tenants is the Council’s first priority.

“Christchurch City Council is strongly committed to providing our tenants with a healthy and safe environment in which to live, and as such has developed a plan to identify and investigate all housing complexes which may have a history of use as a site for waste deposit. The Council will worked as quickly as possible to reassure tenants of a healthy and safe environment”, said Mr Dally.

The Council provides low-cost housing for over 2600 people in Christchurch.

Housing is a self-funding unit within the City Council. Ratepayers funds are not required to carry out these tests.

Investigations will involve soil tests in the first instance.
