Collecting Art After Dark
A glittering black-tie event, the opportunity to invest in contemporary New Zealand art at bargain prices, and the chance to have some serious fun in the name of a good cause, the Art Event at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery will have it all.
The Art Event, Friday 25th May in the Gallery Centre Court, is based around an art auction, raising funds for the purchase of a major work for the new Christchurch Art Gallery.
The auction, hosted by the Robert McDougall After Dark group, is in its third year, having already raised over $20,000. Art Event organiser, Norma Dutton says the function is a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts and serious collectors to purchase a work by a recognised New Zealand artist, some well below market value. "This year we have some wonderful works, generously donated by some of the country's leading artists," says Norma Dutton. "Not only is the art for auction extremely good value, the event itself is a wonderful celebration of the city's vibrant arts scene." Nineteen works are on offer, from New Zealand artists many featured in the Gallery's own collection. Event goers will be able to register interest in their favourite works, with right of purchase decided by a draw. In addition to the blind auction, two works, one by Don Peebles and one by Bing Dawe will be auctioned in the traditional manner. Gallery Director Tony Preston says the evening is one that any art lover will not want to miss. "The Art Event is one of the year's best social events," says Tony Preston. "It really is a great deal of fun and a chance for everyone to take a significant New Zealand art work home with them."
