Surfing USSR Hang Five in Cathedral Square
Surfing USSR will perform surf versions of toe-tapping klezmer tunes, Eastern European Folk tunes, Bond tunes, and much more in Cathedral Square on Friday 9 March.
Formed in 1999, Surfing USSR members are Greg Malcolm (formerly of The Greg Malcolm Set) on guitar, Marc Howe (the mambo king) on bass, and Matt Gibb on drums. Greg fell in love with traditional Jewish (klezmer) melodies while living in Berlin for two years, and he says "I love the melodies, theyre about the only thing that remains true to the original traditional tunes, some of which were written as far back as 1910."
Surfing USSR are becoming well known throughout Christchurch, and their diverse range of musical backgrounds, have helped to create their distinctive and yet fun style of klezmer music. Having recently received a Creative Communities grant, the band are all working towards releasing their first CD within the next few weeks, and also planning a South Island tour in order to promote the CD.
