Plan For New Pedestrian Mall

Another pedestrian mall may be created by the Christchurch City Council in the city centre.

A plan will go to the City Council later this month to put a pedestrian mall in part of Tramway Lane, which runs between Worcester and Hereford streets. The mall would be designed at the southern end of the lane.

The tram barn is at the northern end of the lane.

The City Services Committee yesterday recommended that the Council approve the plan.

The lane is a narrow access street that, according to the Central Area Engineer, Peter Atkinson, is on the "hoon route around the town."

Occupants of the lane have expressed concern about the use of the lane by "errant motorists" and a number suggested that the lane could be used for outdoor seating.

The new mall would be similar to the City Mall and New Regent Street but would operate from 6pm to 7am the next day.

Mr. Atkinson told the committee that submissions had been made to enhance the street with trees, feature paving and other features to "give special character and provide restraint to the speed of vehicles."
