Community Hui / Meeting On Aranui Renewal

A community hui / meeting on how best to include the community in dealing with local issues will be held soon as part of the Aranui Community Renewal Project.

The project - a joint partnership between Housing New Zealand and the Christchurch City Council - was started six months ago and is the first of its kind in the country. City Councillor Carole Anderton, chairwoman of the joint working party, says that the project includes addressing issues raised by the residents of Aranui. “At our last meeting the group developed a timetable for establishing a more community-focused Council-HNZ presence in Aranui, starting with the employment of a local community project worker.” The Council and Housing New Zealand have agreed to the funding.

The group has held two meetings in the Wainoni-Aranui Family Centre in Hampshire Street and it has decided to hold a community hui / meeting later this month. Local residents have raised a number of both positive and negative issues with the group, says Cr. Anderton. “The residents want to discuss these issues further and be part of the solutions so we will hold a community hui / meeting,” she said.

The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board has also been involved in consultations on the project by involving local community groups in discussions.
