Centennial Pool Water Feature To Be Commissioned
A futuristic water feature at the Elsie Locke Reserve, adjacent to the Centennial Leisure Centre in Armagh Street, will be commissioned at 3pm on Thursday 29 March.
The commissioning, by unveiling a bronze commemorative plaque, will be carried out by the chairman of the sub-committee for the project, Cr. Denis O’Rourke.
The water feature, which has two drinking fountains at different levels, was partly funded by Brierley Investments Ltd which gave the Council $20,000 several years ago when it held its annual meeting in the city.
The then Mayor, Vicki Buck, suggested that the money be used for a play structure in Victoria Square but after public consultation it was decided it was not suitable for the square.
The Council sub-committee decided that the water feature should be near the Centennial Pool as one was originally included in the redevelopment plans but it did not go ahead at the time of construction.
The committee felt that the drinking fountain should be close to the city’s centre and it would be used by the large number of children visiting the leisure centre.
The water and glass feature was designed by Pippin Wright-Stow, a student at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, and several local firms were involved in its construction, Burns and Ferrall Ltd, Pilkington (NZ) Ltd, and W J Reynolds and Sons.
