Minister To Open Newest Council Flats
The Minister of Local Government, Sandra Lee, will officially open the Tommy Taylor Courts in Waltham next month.
The 25-unit complex, at the corner of Waltham Road and Brougham Street, will be named after a former Christchurch Mayor and Member of Parliament.
Tommy Taylor was a great orator and was also a leader of the temperance movement in Christchurch. He died in 1911 aged 48. The complex will be opened on Saturday 4 August at 2pm. Christchurch’s Mayor Garry Moore will also speak. The 25 units range from one-bedroom to four-bedrooms and the complex has been occupied since mid-February. The complex was available to anyone on a low income and low assets and has attracted tenants from the 20s to the mid-70s in age and a wide variety of nationalities. With the opening of Tommy Taylor Courts the Christchurch City Council’s housing stock now totals more than 2600, making it the second biggest landlord in New Zealand, after Housing NZ.
