Christchurch City Council Media Release 17 July 2001

Libraries To Celebrate Maori Language

Visitors to Christchurch City Libraries during the week starting 22 July will be invited to join with staff in celebrating the Maori Language.

A kia ora greeting is just one part of this year’s Maori Language Week at the libraries.

Other highlights include the production of a newsletter - He Manawa o te reo - the Heart of the language, a Maori language workshop at the Central Library - Te Ataarangi, Kapahaka performances and demonstrations on Tukutuku weaving and poi making.

Terry Ryan from the Ngai Tahu Whakapapa unit will present a session on Maori place names in the Canterbury region. The library website will have a new Maori language homepage and some library information pages in Maori.

“We are delighted to be able to make this range of activities and resources available to the public,” says Haneta Pierce, Maori Resources Librarian.

“There is a wonderful balance between traditional Maori arts- the Tukutuku weaving, and the latest technology - Maori language on the website. We hope our customers will enjoy this cultural experience.”

Further details are available on the library website or phone 941 7923.

Further information: Haneta Pierce, Maori Resources Librarian, Christchurch City Libraries, 941 7923, and Vicky Heward, Promotions & Publications Specialist, Christchurch City Libraries, 372 7845.
