In the past, parking officers have used motorcycles or have walked their beats.

The use of a cycle will be a pilot scheme as part of the City Council’s environmentally sustainable city push.

Investigations are being made to replace some the Council’s vehicle fleet with more sustainable forms of transport.

A Cycle Planning Officer, Brent Ferigo, says the move to use a bicycle is a joint initiative among several Council units.

“It could be said that this is one small cycle by man but one huge revolution for mankind or, in this case, the City Council,” he says.

Parking Officer Paul Wilson will set off for the first time on his cycle at 10am Monday 5 March from the Parking Unit premises in Tuam Street, across the road from the Civic Offices. The bike will be supplied by Bike Shack, Lincoln Road.
