Christchurch City Council Media Release 28 February 2001

Parking Officer To Cycle Around City

Christchurch City Councilís first parking officer to use a bicycle for his job will hit the streets on Monday next week.

Parking officer Paul Wilson will become the first in the Councilís history to use a cycle for his duties.

In the past, parking officers have used motorcycles or have walked their beats.

Paul Wilson will cover the central city area.

The use of a cycle will be a pilot scheme as part of the City Councilís environmentally sustainable city push.

Investigations are being made to replace some the Councilís vehicle fleet with more sustainable forms of transport.

A Cycle Planning Officer, Brent Ferigo, says the move to use a bicycle is a joint initiative among several Council units.

ďIt could be said that this is one small cycle by man but one huge revolution for mankind or, in this case, the City Council,Ē he says.

Parking Officer Paul Wilson will set off for the first time on his cycle at 10am Monday 5 March from the Parking Unit premises in Tuam Street, across the road from the Civic Offices. The bike will be supplied by Bike Shack, Lincoln Road.

Further information: Brent Ferigo: 941 8925.
