Diseased trees to come out in Hagley Park
Seven old English beech trees will be felled in North Hagley Park next week. The 130-year-old trees (Fagus salvatica) have the disease, ganoderma, and are in a dangerous state.
The trees form an avenue near the Kate Sheppard Walk and the golf clubhouse and the Parks and Waterways Unit’s arborist, Dieter Steinegg, says it is unfortunate that the magnificent trees have to be removed.
They were due to be removed last year but they received a temporary reprieve when the October 12 storm struck and other work was finished first.
Two beeches in the avenue were removed earlier because of the same disease. The trees have been monitored for more than 10 years and were identified to be progressively declining.
The recovered timber will be used for milling but Mr. Steinegg expected the trucks to be badly diseased. Anyone interested in obtaining the timber can contact the unit, he says.
