Christchurch City Council Media Release 9 February 2001

Cycle Route Across S.i. Mooted

The idea of a coast-to-coast cycle route for the South Island is to be explored by the Christchurch City Council.

The Council’s Cycling Transport Planner, Alix Newman, says that at this stage the project is simply a concept.

"However, it is known that there have been people thinking about the possibility of such a route for years," he says.

The Council wants to explore the idea further and will hold a public meeting on Monday 19 February at 7pm at the Centra Hotel, Cashel Street.

The meeting is open anyone interested in the concept.

Mr Newman says that the Council has always been interested in developing cycling in the city for individual health, economic, environmental and traffic-reduction benefits.

"The Council is also interested in seeing these benefits go beyond Christchurch. The City is nationally recognised as a leading agency in developing cycling facilities, promotions and education programmes," he says.

"After observing the tremendous success of a national 5000km cycle network in the United Kingdom that has revitalised parts of the rural countryside and given a boost to cycling nationally, I would like to explore the possibility of a coast-to-coast South Island cycle route," Mr Newman says.

Those interested in attending should contact City Streets Unit at cycling@ccc.govt.nz or 941 8537.
