Christchurch City Council Media Release 21 December 2001

Vehicle Hoons Cause Lock Up Of New Brighton Pier Carpark

As a result of regular complaints to the City Council about excessive vehicle noise late at night from the large beach-front car park at the New Brighton Pier, Parks and Waterways Unit staff have instructed a security company to lock up the car park between 11.00pm and 7.00am, all year round.

Local neighbours are suffering disturbed nights from the increasing levels of noisy and dangerous driving behaviour in the car park.

Prior to the Pier's construction, the car park had been locked regularly and the decision has been made to reinstate that control. Public car parking for late night visitors and fishermen after 11.00pm is still available adjacent to the Pier, beside the New Brighton Library building.
