Christchurch City Council Media Release 7 December 2001

Mural to be painted at Hoon Hay Youth Centre

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

What: On Saturday, December 8 a group of young people (age range from 12-22) from Hoon Hay is painting a multi-cultural mural on a wall of the Hoon Hay Youth Centre. The initiative is being co-ordinated by the Christchurch City Council’s Legal Art Programme.

When: The mural will be painted from 10am - 5pm on Saturday, December 8. The recommended time for photographs is from 3pm onwards.

Where: The Hoon Hay Youth Centre, cnr of McCarthy Street and Rowley Avenue.

Background: Hoon Hay has suffered from heavy tagging in the past. Artists from the Legal Art Programme were asked by the Hoon Hay community to run a series of graffiti art workshops with young people from the community. Funding was secured from the local community board to carry out a legal art project. Workshops were held twice a week over the last month with the community to design a mural for the wall. By giving ownership of the project to the youth of Hoon Hay and the community, it is hoped the area will remain tag-free in the future.
