Two Pin Oaks To Be Moved
Two 10m-high pin oaks are to be removed from the Peter Scoular Park, Tuam Street, tomorrow for replanting elsewhere in Christchurch reserves.
The two mature trees will be taken out in an operation starting at 6.30am tomorrow, Thursday 23 August.
One oak will be replanted in Worcester Boulevard, near the Captain Scott statue, and the other will be placed in the Doris Lusk Reserve, next to the Linwood Community Arts Centre in Stanmore Road. A large 16-tonne Treespade machine, especially brought from Auckland by the Christchurch City Council, will remove the trees within minutes. The machine’s hydraulic spades dig down and take up to 3-tonne root balls in one bite. While in the city the machine will be used to transplant about 40 semi-mature trees. The two oaks in the Peter Scoular Park are being removed to allow more light into the area. It was over-sown when it was first created.
