Christchurch City Council Media Release 26 April 2001

New electronic products at library

Christchurch City Libraries has introduced a whole host of new electronic products including on-line magazines, newspapers, the Oxford Dictionary and encyclopaedias, plus business, science, music, art, biography and literature databases.

Selected for their ease of use, networkability and accessibility via the internet, these resources provide instant access to a wealth of top quality information. They can be used free of charge at Christchurch City Libraries and most can be used via the Internet by library members with a PIN.

"The most exciting thing about these new products is that they're available to everyone," said John Truesdale, the library's manager of information technology services. "You can use them from work, home or school, or come into the library if you don't have other access to a computer."

Some of the new databases can be used by thousands of people at a time. Users can read the latest issues of magazines and international newspapers online, access reliable information on a whole range of subjects, and use specialist services such as NoveList, which offers suggestions for new reading material based on reader's preferences.

"Electronic access to databases such as AccessScience (the on-line version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopaedia of Science and Technology) and Grolier Online (a full encyclopaedia) will be of great interest to schools, which independently may not be able to provide these resources," says Mr Truesdale. "They're also a great source of information for homework, university study and general interest."

The new products can be used via the library's website at: http://library.christchurch.org.nz.
