Christchurch City Council Media Release 17 April 2001

Extra Hornby Anzac Service

An Anzac Service will be held at Hornby Primary School, Waterloo Road this year following representations made to Christchurch’s Deputy Mayor, Lesley Keast.

Anzac services were once held at the school’s memorial for Hornby servicemen who served in World War One but they were dropped and an annual district service was held at Templeton.

However, Mrs Keast was asked at a recent meeting of the Hei Hei Residents' Association if a small Anzac service could be held again at the Hornby School.

She has agreed to do that and says she did so because not all families and school children are able to travel to Templeton for the Paparua RSA service.

Mrs Keast says after assembling at Hei Hei Community Centre, Wycola Avenue at 8.45am it is intended to walk from the centre to the school for the service. The service will start at the war memorial at Hornby Primary at 9am. After the group will return to the centre for refreshments.

She hopes local school children will make their own poppies to lay on the memorial and possibly some will speak or read a poem at the service.
