Dawn Service Start To City's ANZAC Day
Anzac Day, Wednesday 25 April, will start in Christchurch with the dawn parade at 6am and be followed by the Citizens’ Service at 10am.
The Dawn Service when a parade will assemble on the western side of Cathedral Square. War veterans will parade 12 abreast and will march to the War Memorial beside the Christchurch Cathedral in the Square.
The Anzac Dedication will be given by Colonel Joel Maynard, of the United States Air National Guard, before wreaths will be laid at the Memorial. The Christchurch City Council-RSA Citizens’ Anzac Day Commemoration Services will be held in the Cathedral at 10am. The Dean, the Very Rev John Bluck, will lead the service. The 2nd Battalion Band, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast and Canterbury Royal NZ Infantry Regiment will perform musical items at the service. Christchurch’s Mayor Garry Moore will attend both services. Audio-visual journeys to East Timor and the Somme battlefields will feature at the Cathedral’s service this Sunday at 7pm. Christchurch’s Mayor, Garry Moore, said the audio-visual journeys to East Timor and World War One battlefields on the Somme will be a wonderful way to show how New Zealand can play a role in international affairs. The service, looking forward to Anzac Day, will include a presentation by Colonel Martin Dransfield, who commanded the most recent contingent of NZ peacekeeping troops in East Timor.
