Bus-Stop Parking Under Scrutiny
From Monday 23
April Christchurch City Council parking officers will be increasing the level
of surveillance of bus stops along Colombo Street.
Drivers found parking on these bus stops can expect to receive offence notices.
Council parking
officers will be rigorously enforcing the no parking on bus stops
law, especially at platforms D and E of the Bus Exchange.
Drivers who park
on bus stops not only disrupt buses, passengers and traffic flow, but interfere
with Real Time Information, as the buses must pass a trigger point on the stops
for RTI to recognise the bus arrival.
Even if parking
officers do not spot offences, infringement notices are still likely to be issued
to offenders, as the Councils Parking Unit will take action on complaints
from bus drivers.
The fine for parking
on a bus stop is $40, however, offenders can also be fined for inconsiderate
parking which carries a fine of $60, says the Parking Unit Manger, Maurice Smith.
Short-term drop-off
and pick-up facilities are adjacent to the stops on Colombo Street. The Crossing
Car Park, with its entrance off Lichfield Street, is also available.
