Christchurch City Council Media Release 16 February 2000

Unique Housing Complex Under Way

Work is well under way on a unique housing complex in Percival Street, Beckenham.

Percival Courts is the first housing venture of its type in New Zealand and is a joint initiative of the Christchurch City Council and the Beckenham Community Housing Trust of the Colombo Street Baptist Church.

Eleven units are taking shape on trust land at the rear of the church. The land at 7 and 11 Percival Street is leased to the Council from the Trust and the City Council is building the units.

The trust will manage the project and will provide accommodation for people with physical disabilities and those in the local community who will benefit from a supportive environment.

A trust worker will help residents develop friendships and a supportive network among themselves.

Each unit will have one double bedroom and will be rented to people living on their own.

The total cost of the complex will be about $1.4 million, including land costs, and is expected to be finished in July.

Framing of the units is going up this week.

The trust is working on applications for tenancies.
