Search Starts For Top Diary

Dairies competing for the top-shop prize – the best-kept dairy – will be under the spotlight next week.

Nearly 30 Christchurch dairies have entered a competition to find the Cream of the Dairies, a contest started two years ago by the Keep Christchurch Beautiful Campaign.

The first competition attracted national attention, and once again Meadow Fresh Foods Ltd is the principal sponsor of the event.

Next week the competition assessor will start judging.

The competition is held to combat litter in the city. Keep Christchurch Beautiful Campaign Co-ordinator Ingrid Le Fevre says that in Christchurch, along with the rest of the world, the problem of litter is increasing.

Packaging problems

Packaging creates most of the litter on the streets, in parks, and on beaches.

The Cream of the Dairies contest is being held to reduce litter coming from dairies, Miss Le Fevre says.

"It will also give recognition to dairy operators who actively serve their communities by upgrading, beautifying and maintaining their premises and immediate surroundings," she says.

It is not the intention to blame dairy operators for litter from careless customers but rather to make the public aware of the growing problem of litter, particularly from confectionery packaging.

Twelve finalists will be announced in May and the overall winner will receive a certificate and a cheque for $500 from Meadow Fresh Foods.
