Showtime Canterbury to be Enhanced by New Events

November 4th to 19th, 2000

With over 40 events in a two week period, Cantabrians and visitors to Canterbury are guaranteed to have a wonderful time during Showtime Canterbury – a celebration of provincial art, craft, sport, racing, entertainment and rural activities.

Centering around the Canterbury Show, the Canterbury Draught New Zealand Trotting Cup Day, the Canterbury Draught New Zealand Cup Meeting and the Meridian Energy Fireworks Extravaganza, the festival will this year be joined by 35 other events, including several new activities.

“ We’re really excited to be able to expand the festival this year” says Festival Publicist Beatrice Cheer, with the Christchurch City Council Leisure Events team. “ With Cantabrians and travelers from all over the country visiting the city for Showtime, it makes sense to have a wide variety of quality local experiences for them to take part in”.

New events this year include the Canterbury Lamb and Lager Festival on Friday 17th November in The Arts Centre. This inaugural celebration showcases local foods and refreshments as well as providing country music and dancing.

The Christchurch Star Parent and Family Expo at Pioneer Stadium on November 11th and 12th promises to be fun and educational, and FloravisioNZ 2000, from November 9th to 12th will be the first time since 1985 that this Floral Art Society exhibition will be held in the South Island, at the Christchurch Convention Centre.

Also new to the Showtime Canterbury programme is an exhibition of quilts called ‘Celebrating Curves’, taking place in the Arts Centre up until November 12th.

The Sumner School Garden Tour promises a fascinating day visiting 12 gardens on Saturday November 4th, and the Craft Seen exhibition at Canterbury Museum - daily throughout the festival - will present work by leading Canterbury crafts people of diverse disciplines.

“There is something for everyone in this years programme” say Beatrice Cheer, “and we like to think Showtime Canterbury showcases the very best that Canterbury has to offer.”
