Christchurch City Council Media Release 12 October 2000

Council’s Flood Warnings

The Christchurch City Council issued two warnings about the flood emergency this afternoon.

One was that drivers should slow up in or near flooded areas to prevent bow waves causing more damage to properties.

Sandbags have been placed in Main Road and Sumnervale Drive, Sumner, to prevent water going into properties.

Driving slowly will also prevent stalling vehicles in floodwaters.

Another warning issued was that parents should prevent children playing in floodwater.
This is dangerous because sewage could have got into the floodwater.

The Lyttelton Road Tunnel has been reopened but it can be used via Bridle Path Road only.

Other road closings are Riverlaw Terrace (at Palatine Terrace end), Curries Road (at Garlands and Port Hills roads), and Butterfield Avenue (at Buckleys Road).
