Canty’s Sporting History to Be Saved
Items with sporting associations are wanted for a Sport 2000 Collection to by held by Canterbury Museum.
Canterbury Museum and Sport 2000 will launch the collection on Thursday 5 October at 10am at the Museum.
The two bodies are working together to ensure the preservation of Canterbury’s sporting heritage. To help realise this vision, the Sport 2000 Collection will be established at the Museum.
It will provide a repository of Canterbury sports memorabilia and will serve as a lasting collection of sporting documents, sports wear, equipment, awards and trophies, and photographs.
Under the documents category the Collection will welcome competition rules and results, programmes, annual reports, minute books, membership lists, and even menus and tickets. Any photographs, paintings of club members, and movie films are also sought.
Items of sports wear are sought, preferably in good order, and with its history of use.
Sports equipment should preferably be in good order, too, and with a history of use.
The creation of the collection was of the main projects for Sports 2000, an arm of Turning Point 2000, that was set up to celebrate the Millennium.
"Not only will the public be able to see the sports memorabilia but also it will be stored as a history of how sport in Canterbury was developed over the past 150 years," says Alistair Graham, the Christchurch City Council Leisure Manager, and chairman of Sport 2000.
Our initial intention is to build up the collection, he says.
At the launch a number of significant sporting items will be donated to the collection, and some by the Christchurch City Council.
