Christchurch City Council Media Release 20 November 2000

School Speed Zones Under Spotlight

Public comment is wanted about the 40km/h part-time school speed zones trial in Christchurch.

The speed zones are outside Belfast, Bishopdale, Halswell and Harewood primary schools, and at Branston Intermediate.

"We want to find out how effective the public experiences the school speed zones to be in improving child road safety, and how they might be used in the future", says Christchurch City Council’s Safe Routes to School Co-ordinator Paul Cottam.

Survey booklets will be delivered this week to the five schools and nearby houses.

The surveys will also be available at Council libraries and service centres for the public to fill in. They will be available until the end of November, or until all completed.

Those filling out the surveys will be eligible for a draw of $100 grocery vouchers. The survey will also be on-line on the Council’s web page, at www.ccc.govt.nz/saferoutes/survey.

As part of their evaluation, the Land Transport Safety Authority has been measuring vehicle speeds at the school speed zone sites.
