NZ First In New Library
If the Christchurch City Council decides to built a new library in the south of the city it will incorporate a learning centre that will be the first of its kind in New Zealand.
The Council will vote on a proposal on November 23 that it build a new $4.5 million facility that will include a learning centre, library and service centre on the site of present Beckenham Service Centre.
The plan was drawn up following the Council not being able to decide several months ago what to do with the existing Spreydon Library in Barrington Street.
Proposals then included expanding the building into Barrington Park or putting a new library in the adjacent Barrington Mall.
The new plan is to provide a new library at $3.2 million, a learning centre at $330,000, and a service centre at $595,650. Another $450,000 would be needed to stock the library and fit out the service centre.
The learning centre will provide learning opportunities in technology and information skills for school children, teachers and the community.
Global Net 2000, a successful Turning Point 2000 millennium project, would make its home in the centre.
Plans are to form a partnership with the Ministry of Education.
A learning centre of this type would be a first for New Zealand and a "likely model for others to follow."
The St Martins and Spreydon libraries would remain open under the plan that was given the thumbs-up by the Community Services Committee this week.
