City Centre To Get Snapped

Life and scenes in Christchurch’s central city are the subjects for a new photographic competition.

City professional and amateur photographers will be able to compete for prizes in a "Fresh Perspectives" competition, which is part of the Mayoral Forum’s campaign to revitalise the central city.

The Central City Mayoral Forum, in partnership with Christchurch and Canterbury Marketing Ltd and the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography, is hosting the competition. It is hoped that both professional and amateur photographers will take to capture the heart of the city as part of the revitalisation campaign.

The winning professional will win a $2000 prize and the title of Christchurch Photographer of the Year.

The amateur section will have two prizes, each of $200 cash and a $300 voucher and five merit prizes of $50 vouchers and two rolls of colour film plus a student prize of $200 cash and a $300 voucher.

A people’s prize of a $100 voucher and two rolls of colour film will be awarded at the close of the exhibition on the basis of votes by visitors.

The winning entries, together with about 30 finalists from the amateur section, will be exhibited in the old Chief Post Office in Cathedral Square from 2-17 December.

In conjunction with the exhibition will be the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers’ Touring Print Exhibition, comprising top prints from the institute’s annual print competition.

Judges for the professional section will be Darryll Park, chief executive of the Christchurch and Canterbury Marketing, Richard Poole, chairman of the honours council of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography, and Lloyd Park, one of New Zealand’s leading commercial and advertising photographers.

Judges for the amateur section will be Christchurch’s Mayor Garry Moore, Cr. Erin Baker, a former world triathlon champion, and Dr Newell Grenfell, a leading exhibitor within the Photographic Society of New Zealand.

In the professional section photographers will entry a portfolio of four to six images that capture "the unique nature or points of difference of the Central City of Christchurch" with particular emphasis on its diversity and the inclusion of people.

In the amateur section photographers are to "capture the character of the Central City" with no restrictions on the number of prints entered.

The central city is defined as being the area surrounded by the four avenues, Bealey, Rolleston, Fitzgerald and Moorhouse.

Entries will close on 24 November and the winners will be announced on 1 December.
