Hundreds of Christchurch primary and intermediate school children will be cleaning local beaches on Tuesday 28 November and leaving environmental messages in the sand as they go.

This will part of the annual Gigantic Beach Clean Up Day and will be held on beaches from Taylors Mistake in the south to Spencer Park in the north.

Eight schools will take part and if the weather is bad the Clean Up Day will be held on Wednesday 29 November.

The Clean Up, organised by the Keep Christchurch Beautiful campaign, has been held since 1991 and last year was the first year the children left messages in the sand.

Teachers will encourage pupils to think about the environment matters, which concern them, such as clean air, water quality, waste, pollution and endangered species. Once the Clean Up has taken place the pupils will leave their messages.
