Central-city Skateboard Facilities Sought

Having been stalled in finishing the skateboarding facilities at Washington Reserve, Moorhouse Avenue, the Christchurch City Council is to seek other sites in the central city area.

The Council cannot proceed with stage two at Washington Reserve because of a legal wrangle over many months.

The chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee, Cr. Graham Condon, says he can see the Council being tied up legally for at least another year.

So yesterday, the Council asked staff to find additional sites in the central city for skateboarding.

The chairwoman of the Community Services Committee, Cr. Carole Anderton, told the Council meeting that as stage two could not be started at Washington Reserve other facilities should be looked at. "The youth of this city are asking us to do this," she said.

Cr. Condon said the Council was "nobbled" over stage two and it was sad that the Council was being blamed for the delay.

The Mayor, Garry Moore, said stage two was blocked by a local landowner.
