Big Night For Environment Awards

A double bill of environment awards will be held on Friday 15 December.

Not only will the annual Christchurch City Council Environment Awards be presented but also six special awards to mark the Millennium and the 150th anniversary of the founding of Canterbury will be announced.

The special awards will be awarded in built and natural categories and be in three, 50-year time bands.

Plaques and medallions will be presented to the winners at the special function at Bellamy’s in the Provincial Council Chambers at 5.30pm on 15 December.

Some of the nominations in the built category were the original Government Buildings, the former Post Office, Christchurch’s two cathedrals, the Arts Centre, the Canterbury Museum, Christ’s College dining room, the Town Hall, the Parkroyal, and the New Brighton Pier.

In the natural category nominations included Hagley Park, Riccarton Bush, Botanic Gardens, the Airport complex, the Summit Road, Victoria Square, Canterbury University campus, and the McLeans Island recreation area.

There will be three categories in the annual environment awards - services to the environment, natural environment, and built environment.

Nominations in the services category include the Recovered Materials Foundation, Addington Bush Society, and Graffiti Busters. Some nominations in the natural environment are Cockayne Reserve, New Brighton foreshore, the University Grounds at Ilam, and Lesser Creek, Travis Swamp.

In the built section nominations include the Le Bon Boli Restaurant, the Pier and clock tower, extensions at Christchurch Airport, and the Ferrymead Historic Park.
