Christchurch City Council Media Release 23 February 2000

New Memorial Lamps And Plaques

New lamps and commemorate plaques are to be unveiled in Sumner on Saturday 26 February.

New lamps have been provided by the Christchurch City Council’s Parks Unit at the Clifton Bay Reserve and at the Boer War monument near Cave Rock. The Sumner Redcliffs Historical Society has provided plaques commemorating the refurbishment of both monuments.

The first ceremony will be held at the Clifton Bay memorial by Councillor Charles Manning and Lady McCombs, widow of Sir Terence McCombs. A memorial to the parents of Sir Terence, James and Elizabeth McCombs, is in the Clifton Bay Reserve. Mrs McCombs was the New Zealand’s first woman member of Parliament and followed her husband, James, into the House. Sir Terence followed her mother into Parliament.

At the other ceremony, Councillor Erin Baker and the president of the Historical Society, Ken Maynard, will unveil the new lamp and the plaque.
