Lifebuoys Disappearing From Pier

Safety is being put at risk by the vandalism of lifebuoys on the New Brighton Pier.

Since the pier was opened 15 months ago the lifebuoy at the seaward-end of the pier has been removed eight times and four times in the last 10 days.

Sometimes it has been simply tossed in the sea and recovered later from the incoming tide but now four lifebuoys (valued at $71 each) have been stolen.

"The cost of replacement is irritating but the loss of a safety device is much more concern. It is just a stupid thing to take the lifebuoys," says the Christchurch City Council’s property asset officer, Grant Ancell.

The council holds several lifebuoys in reserve but its stock will soon need to be replaced if stolen lifebuoys are not returned.
