Cycling Symposium for City Next Year
Christchurch will host a national Cycling Symposium in September next year.
More than 150 people associated with cycling matters attended a symposium in Palmerston North last weekend and the Christchurch City Councils Cycling Planner, Alix Newman, says 10 recommendations emerged from the two-day meeting.
Progress on the recommendations will be reported at the Christchurch symposium next year.
The recommendations included a call for the Government, along with the cycling community, to develop a long-term, sustainable transport strategy.
Delegates also want the Ministry of Transport to develop a separate national cycle strategy and also that the ministry identify a funding process for on-road and dedicated cycle facilities.
A call was made that all roads have safe provision for cyclists and that local government recognises the health, environment, economic, safety and social benefits of greater cycling.
Central and local government should improve communication with New Zealands pool of cycling expertise and research capability, the delegates said. If their expertise is used a fee should be paid to the cyclists.
They also believe that the cycle industry should develop a levy to promote cycling and that cyclists should join the Cycle Advocates Network.
