Christchurch City Council Media Release 2 February 2000

Inner City Board Meets

The interim Inner City advisory Board met for a full day session yesterday at the Arts Centre. There were two clear outcomes.

Firstly, that there was a need for the Board to be established with a clear leadership role. Secondly, that that role was as a facilitative body for inner city development and renewal, not a developer in its own right.

The building of healthy partnerships would be integral to the Board’s work, and it would engage the City as a whole in understanding the challenge that a vibrant city centre was core to the health of Christchurch as a whole.

Chairman, Mayor Garry Moore;

"There is a clear commitment to the work ahead and working parties within the board already engaged on making things happen. One is in campaign mode, telling the story, the second focused on the social and cultural capital we have in abundance, and the third on the planning and implementation issues which are both hugely creative and complex. I’m excited."

Deputy chair Craig Boyce:

"We’re in very early stages, but the tasks are clear. There’s an obvious willingness to get on with the job."

The Board working parties have set up timelines for action and a full report on progress will be put to the City Council in March.
