Christchurch City Council Media Release 9 February 2000

Expressway Roundabout Under Way

Work has started on the roundabout at the Frosts-Travis roads intersection as part of the Woolston-Burwood Expressway.

Some disruption to traffic may occur while it is being built, says the project manager for the joint Christchurch City Council-Transit New Zealand project, Sharon O’Neill.

The route of the expressway in Aranui is now become more obvious with all three contractors on site. The $4 million project is on target for completion in February 2001.

Drivers will need to be careful over the next 16 weeks while the building of the Frosts-Travis roundabout continues.

Good progress is being made on the road north of the river.

Work is also well advanced on the roundabout adjacent to the New Brighton Road and traffic will be diverted on to this in mid-April.

The road linking the two roundabouts (to be called Anzac Drive) will be opened when both roundabouts are finished.

Pile driving will start next week at the south abutment of the new bridge over the Avon River.

It will be 48m long in a three-span, four-lane structure, with a combined cycle way and footpath on the upstream side.

Construction of the south-end road has also started with the excavating of foundations to the north of Wainoni Road and the work will include the installation of traffic signals at the Wainoni-Bexley roads intersection.

The upgraded section of Bexley Road, between Eureka Street and Wainoni Road, will be complete by July this year, but the road north to the new bridge is not expected to open until next year.
