Street Party To Mark End Of Road Works

Residents of Aikmans Road, Merivale, and Elmwood Normal School pupils will be holding a street party tomorrow, Tuesday 12 December, to celebrate the end of their road improvements.

The road has new features, such as a special drop-off zone for school children, a small traffic-control roundabout with new landscaping and planting, new trees and berms, and a 9m carriageway.

Residents have told the Christchurch City Council’s Area Engineer, Brian Boddy, that they are pleased with the changes. So a party was suggested to celebrate the end of road works.

This will be held from 5pm on 12 December and the Mayor, Garry Moore, will call in while driving his Art Car.

Pupils of Elmwood School will present a musical item or two and residents are being encouraged to bring garden furniture into the street for the celebration.

Mr Boddy says the Council often gets resistance from residents to change in their streets, especially to narrowing the roadway, but Aikmans Road is an example of what can be done with the co-operation of residents.

Photograph opportunities: The party will run from 5pm to 7pm and the Mayor and his Art Car are due to arrive about 6.30pm.
