Library To Celebrate Writing Talent
Christchurch City Libraries will welcome several children who have had their impressions of Canterbury published in And me for all of those: voices of Canterbury on Friday 15 December.
Officially launched last week to mark Canterbury’s 150th Anniversary, And me for all of those is a collection of prose and poetry written by Canterbury children, with contributions from local adult authors and illustrators.
The children will be accompanied by some of Canterbury’s, and the country’s, best-known authors - Margaret Mahy, Gavin Bishop and Colin Amodeo, as well as the book’s illustrator - Trish Bowles.
In a celebration of the book, several children will read their contributions, which were inspired by the ‘Spirit of Canterbury’ project organised by the Christchurch School for Young Writers.
“The aim was to produce a book containing the work of established writers of the late twentieth century alongside that of young writers who may join their ranks in the twenty-first,” says Bill Nagelkerke, Children’s and Young Adults’ Services Co-ordinator for the library and member of the book’s editorial team. “We are delighted to host some of these young writers in the library and have the opportunity to hear their impressions of Canterbury first-hand.”
The book contains around 120 pieces selected from hundreds of submissions. The age of contributors ranges from 8 to over 80, with the book’s title, And me for all of those, being taken from the poem by Kate May, who is in Year 7 at Our Lady of the Snows School in Methven.
The children will read their work alongside some of New Zealand’s best-known authors at the Centre for the Child, Central City Library on Friday 15 December 12.15 - 1.00pm.
Copies of the book, which has been published by Clerestory Press, will be on sale.
